This premier and historic institution had started its working as Teacher
Training School established in 1937, promoted to the present status in 1948,
and renamed as College of Education. It has been rendering the services of
training and educating the pupil teachers- B.Ed. and M.Ed. (In-service and
pre-service), who come from far flung areas- Tangdar, Karnah, Kupwara, Gurez,
Leh, Kargil, Rajouri, Poonch, Banihal, Anantnag, Bandipora, Uri, Baramulla,
Budgam, Srinagar & Jammu. The achievement of excellence and working for
teacher effectiveness and efficiency is the mission and goal of the
institution. The total system of education can be overhauled and streamlined
only when the teachers are well trained (professionally and personally). Along
with preparing of the board base of the teachers, the training in teaching
methodology, skills and educational administration through intensive practice
of teaching, micro-teaching and internship are rigorously imparted, in which
the practicing schools are also engaged. The faculty of the institute
(teaching/non-teaching) put forth their efforts for the progress of the
institution.
Furthermore, the institute also offers extension service to the community
through UGC Sponsored Women’s Studies Centre (2006), in the form of research,
teaching, training, extension services, networking and publications. The
extension services are also offered by providing contact classes, face to face
teaching to the B.Ed. Students University of Kashmir. The faculty of the
institute delivers extension lectures to various institutions like IMPA, Human
Resource Development Centre, University of Kashmir and other GO’s and NGO’s.
